The video showed that when small children are given blocks to play with, they don’t hesitate to let their imaginations take over…

A child will have no problem placing the blocks in any order, or build in any direction they want.
However, as we get older and learn that there are “rules” …
…we begin losing our imagination, and focus too much on sticking to what the “rules” dictate.

When I heard the researchers in the video explain this, something just clicked…
I grabbed by yellow sunburst Gibson Les Paul, tuned up, and plugged it into my Marshall amp…
I started to play some of my favorite riffs, one after another…
I didn’t care where on the neck I’d normally would play the riff…
…wherever one riff ended, that’s where the next one would begin.
I’d play the same riffs a few times in a row…
Then I’d play them at different tempos…
I added bends, vibrato, hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides…
I stopped thinking about what I “should” be playing, and Just Played.

And just like that, I was improvising all over the fretboard with complete freedom and control…
I can’t tell you how long David and I were jamming for, because I was in the “zone” and lost track of everything else around me…
Eventually, David and I stopped playing for a bit, and we both let out a primal yell and hugged each other in celebration…
David was incredibly excited, and couldn’t understand how my playing was able to transform so quickly…
I played the part of our fathers’ video where the children were playing with building blocks without caring about following any rules.
And I told David:
“I wanted to see if I could do the same thing"…
I looked at my riffs as building blocks that I could play in any number of ways, and simply build my solo by combining these riff building blocks in different combinations…”
David had a look on his face of pure bewilderment…
After a minute or two, he called our father into the room to get his feedback.
After all, if there was anyone who could put this idea to the test, it was our father…
Our father had been a professional musician and composer for long before David or I were even born…

On top of that, I was reminded that our vocalist wanted to replace me, since my skills had been falling behind the rest of the band.
If I choked or messed up on stage, I would be completely humiliated, kicked out of my band, and probably stop playing guitar altogether
I continued to practice all week, and on the night of our show, I could be seen visibly shaking before we hit the stage.
Before I knew it, the moment I was dreading was here…
Our drummer counted us in to the song I was going to solo during…
First came the verse, then the chorus, bridge, 2nd verse, 2nd chorus, and finally it was my time to take center stage and try to “wow” the audience…
I felt sick to my stomach with nerves…
Like I was standing on a ledge 1,000 feet up and hoped like hell the bungie cord would stop me from falling to my death.
